How to Mount Light Switches

How Do You Mount Light Switches?

Given how often they are used each day for years on end, light switches deserve more consideration than they are usually given.

In many new builds and renovations, mounting light switches come as an afterthought, which could be a costly mistake if you are hoping to achieve a certain look and feel for your space.

If you are looking for ideas to mount light switches for your home or interior design projects, this article will provide you some options that are easy to implement.

What are the Different Ways to Mount Light Switches?

The three common ways to mount light switches are flush mounting (recessed), surface mounting, and wireless mounting (stick-on).

These options can be combined within the building based on the location of the lighting.

  • Flush Mounting

Flush mounting is the standard method used for modern homes. Flush mounting involves connecting the switch directly to the electrical wiring system and installing it within a junction box (J-box) to allow it to rest against the wall surface.

This is the traditional approach of mounting light switches, commonly found in living rooms, bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchens, and other interior spaces.

Flat switch designs such as Vimar Eikon Exe Flat and Vimar Arke Classic are especially suited to these types of interiors as they blend naturally into the surrounding wall surface.

  • Surface Mounting

Surface mounting is a technique where the light switches are connected to cables that are routed externally through protective conduits such as EMT (Electrical Metallic Tubing) or PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride). The light switch itself is installed within a surface-mounted metal or plastic block that is fixed directly onto the wall.

This mounting style is commonly used in garages, sheds, workshops, and spaces with solid brick, concrete, or exposed industrial walls.

If you’d like to match your concrete wall with your light switch, you can use light switches with stone finishes, which is also available under the Vimar Eikon Exe range

  • Wireless Mounting

Sometimes referred to as stick-on or adhesive mounting, wireless mounting is a type of light switch installation that only requires a strong adhesive to attach light switches to any surface, including glass and timber.

This type of mounting only works with battery-powered light switches – where the switch is powered by an actual battery, or kinetic light switches – where pressing the button generates enough energy to transmit radio signals that control the lighting.

This mounting is used for spaces where wiring is impossible or impractical, such as retrofitting heritage properties or older buildings, outdoor and garden areas, rental spaces, closets, and storage.

With the wireless compatibility of Vimar Eikon, Arke and Plana ranges, your options are not limited to off-the-shelf white plastic light switches. Vimar designer faceplates can integrate modular wireless controls that can be fitted onto standard flush-mount boxes or attached directly to surfaces. Aside from ease of installation, they can also be repositioned when required.
